What They Really Think

Audio of Republican strategist Mike Murphy and conservative columnist Peggy Noonan trashing the Palin pick is making the rounds.  (You can listen — and watch — below as Murphy and Noonan’s candid thoughts are caught on an open mic after they thought the cameras had stopped rolling).

Their comments echo others I have heard at this convention.  While delegates I talked to seem genuinely excited and intrigued by Palin, Republican consultants and wiseguys think her selection is a disaster.  One of the reasons that the press coverage of the pick has been so bad is that many of the Republicans that reporters talk to are trashing it behind the scenes.  The McCain campaign can blame the media all they want for this firestorm — but their problem here is much closer to home.  Murphy and Noonan merely said what a lot of their peers and colleagues have been saying privately all week.

Credibility, Much?

Catch this exchange between a reporter and McCain campaign surrogate Carly Fiorina, as reported by the New York Observer:

When another reporter asked, “Would you concede that Hillary Clinton has been a victim of sexism emanating from the Republican Party?”
“No, I would not concede that,” she said. The reporters in the briefing room chuckled.
“I would absolutely say Hillary Clinton has been subjected to sexism,” she continued. “But, by the way if there are facts that you can show me I’d be delighted to see them. But I do not think that based on my experience and what I have seen, I do not think the Republican Party subjected her to sexism.”

Right.  The Republican party never subjected Hillary Clinton to any sexism.  Perhaps the GOP would have a bit more credibility defending Gov. Palin from sexist attacks if they were a bit more willing to admit their own misdeeds.
