Sunday Morning Flashback: The Fine Young Cannibals
- filed under Music
The 1987 movie Tin Men is not one of Barry Levinson’s most memorable: the plot is fairly preposterous and the actors — Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito — aren’t given much to work with.
It is worth seeing, however, for the appearance of The Fine Young Cannibals as the house band in a night club that the “Tin Men” frequent. The band appears only briefly, but they steal the movie, looking stylish and beautiful, and playing the kind of retro soul that Amy Winehouse would ride to fame and fortune two decades later.
“She Drives Me Crazy” was the band’s biggest chart topping single, but it’s “Good Thing” that captures their sound best: Roland Gift’s retro velvety vocals set to Any Cox and David Steele’s mix of ska, soul and motown.
